You put it on in the morning. Again after coffee. Again after lunch. Maybe once more before dinner. Over a lifetime, a woman who wears lipstick daily will apply it thousands of times and a good portion of what she applies, she swallows.
Which makes it worth asking a question most of us have never thought to ask: what is a lipstick actually made of?
For a great many of them, the answer includes plastic.
The word to look for: polyethylene

Polyethylene is plastic. The same material as a grocery bag, a milk jug, a shipping envelope. It is one of the most produced plastics on earth and it is sitting on the ingredient list of an enormous number of lipsticks, right now, in drawers and handbags everywhere.
Almost nobody knows this. And that isn't because women aren't paying attention. It's because polyethylene doesn't sound like plastic. It sounds chemical in the way that every cosmetic ingredient sounds chemical: harmless, technical, probably fine. It sits on the label between the waxes and the pigments and reads as just another word.
That's the whole trick. Nothing is hidden. It's printed right there. We were simply never taught what we were looking at.

Truly :go get one out of your bag. Turn it over, or look the shade up online. Scan the ingredient list for any of these:
Polyethylene (PE) — the most common one, and the one to learn first
Acrylates copolymer and acrylates crosspolymer — the film-formers behind “long-wear” and “transfer-proof”
Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)
Nylon-12 or nylon-6 (also listed as polyamide)
Polypropylene (PP), polyurethane, PET or polyethylene terephthalate
PEG compounds — polyethylene glycol, in all its numbered forms
Polybutene, polyisobutene, polysilicone, polymethylsilsesquioxane
The simplest rule anyone ever gave us: if it begins with “poly,” stop and look it up. Poly means many, many identical units chained together. That chain is what a polymer is, and a synthetic polymer is what a plastic is.
And “clean” on the front doesn't settle it
Here's the part that genuinely isn't fair to shoppers. In the United States, “clean” has no legal definition in cosmetics. Neither does “natural,” or “non-toxic,” or “pure.” No regulator sets the standard. Each brand decides for itself what its own word means, and each retailer sets its own bar for what earns the label on the shelf.
Which means a lipstick can be marketed as clean, sit in a clean beauty section, meet a retailer's published clean standard, and still contain polyethylene. That happens constantly, at every price point, from the drugstore to the luxury counter. It isn't a conspiracy. It's simply that most clean standards were written around parabens, phthalates, sulfates and formaldehyde, and plastic polymers were never added to the list.
So the front of the package can't do this work for you. Only the back can.
Why it's in there at all
Microplastics in cosmetics are synthetic polymers: plastic in powder, film, wax or liquid form and they've been deliberately added to beauty products since the 1960s. In lip products they do the jobs that sound appealing on a label: they make color cling, resist transfer, survive a glass of wine, hold a matte finish in place all day.
They also make lipstick cheap to manufacture and remarkably stable on a shelf. That is, quietly, the real reason they're everywhere.
And here's the part that surprises people most. The microbead bans passed in the US, UK, EU and Canada — the ones we all read about — apply almost entirely to rinse-off products. Face scrubs. Body washes. Things you wash down the drain. Leave-on makeup, the products that stay on your body all day, were largely left alone.
What the new research actually says
In July 2026, the European Heart Journal published a study that received a lot of attention. Italian researchers examined blood drawn from the coronary arteries of 61 patients and found micro- and nanoplastics in 84% of those who had suffered a severe heart attack — compared with 40% of patients with chronic heart disease and 32% of patients whose arteries were normal. The most common plastic found was polyethylene. It followed earlier research that found plastic particles lodged in arterial plaque.
We want to be careful and honest with you here, because you deserve that more than you deserve a scare.
This was a small study. It shows an association, not proof of cause. The exposures the researchers were able to link to higher plastic levels were air pollution and smoking, not cosmetics. No one has demonstrated that lipstick contributes to heart disease, and we are not going to suggest otherwise.
What the study does show, clearly, is something we already suspected: these particles are turning up inside human bodies, in places nobody intended them to reach.
Researchers have now found them in blood, in placentas, in arterial plaque. The science of what they do once they're there is still being written.
So here's the part we can actually do something about
You cannot choose the air you breathe. You can't filter your commute or opt out of the atmosphere. Most of our plastic exposure arrives without our permission and without our knowledge.
But a lipstick is a choice. It's one of the few exposures in this entire conversation that you get to make deliberately, at a counter, with the ingredient list right there in your hand.
And lips are not like the rest of your skin. Intact skin is a genuine barrier, most solid particles simply don't cross it. Lips are different, not because they absorb more, but because of what you do with them. You eat. You drink. You press your lips together. Lipstick doesn't stay put; a meaningful share of every application ends up swallowed. It is the one cosmetic we consume.
So when the question is “how much plastic would you like to eat this week,” the reasonable answer is: as little as I can manage.
We deserve better than this
None of this is about panic. It's about being told the truth by the people who make the things we put on our bodies — and being given a real option.
Women have been sold “long-wearing” for decades without ever being told what makes it long-wearing. We were never asked whether we'd trade a plastic film for eight-hour color. The choice was simply made for us, quietly, on an ingredient list written in a language most of us were never taught to read.
