The Fragrance Loophole Explained
Many brands claim their products contain "no artificial fragrance," but the reality often involves synthetic and "natural" fragrances comprising multiple chemicals. This is due to the "fragrance loophole." Under the Federal Fair Packaging and Labeling Act of 1973, companies must list ingredients except for fragrances, considered trade secrets. This loophole allows them to omit potentially harmful ingredients from labels, encompassing anything from solvents and UV-absorbers to preservatives and dyes.
Out of about 4,000 chemicals that could be included under "fragrance," 3,224 are used for scent, while 395 serve functional purposes like enhancing durability or controlling viscosity.
Phthalates: A Major Concern
One of the most harmful ingredients often hidden in fragrances is phthalates. These chemicals are primarily used to prolong the scent's longevity and are notorious endocrine disruptors, interfering with the body’s hormone functions. Research links phthalates to numerous health issues, including reproductive abnormalities, early puberty, decreased fertility in males, and increased risks of chronic diseases like diabetes and cancer. Don't be fooled, you will not see "Phthalates" on an ingredient list. Examples of phthalates allowed under the fragrance loophole include Bis(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate, Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, Dibutyl phthalate, Diethyl phthalate, Dimethyl phthalate, Dioctyl phthalate.
