The Taste of Mexico City: Gabriela's 2024 List 💋

Buen Provecho!

The arrival of the Michelin Guide in Mexico earlier this summer sparked quite a buzz in the country’s culinary circles. While many celebrated the accolades given to renowned restaurants like Pujol and Quintonil, the guide also stirred some controversy by overlooking a few local stars that truly capture the essence of Mexico City’s vibrant food scene - including from me!

As someone who is deeply passionate about the culinary arts and inspired by my incredible city, I wanted to share my own list of favorite places to eat right now in CDMX. These are the spots that resonate with me, not just for their flavors but for the stories they tell—stories that are as rich and layered as the city itself.

And, of course, as you explore these culinary treasures, don’t forget to take along our lipstick shade Mexico City at 9PM. This bold, beautiful color captures the allure of the city at night—perfect for any evening out in one of the world’s most dynamic cities.

Lago Algo

When you find yourself wandering through Bosque de Chapultepec, make sure to end your stroll with a visit to Lago Algo. This restaurant, set within a Brutalist architectural gem, is both a contemporary art gallery and a culinary destination. Overlooking the serene lake, the dining room provides a tranquil setting that’s perfect for brunch. The endive salad, cheese ravioli with pumpkin broth, and glazed pork chop are just a few of the dishes that reflect the artistry and creativity of the space. It’s an experience that beautifully marries visual and culinary arts, making it one of my must-visit spots.

Address: Bosque de Chapultepec, Pista El Sope S/N, Bosque de Chapultepec II, CDMX

Pujol

Pujol is not just a restaurant—it’s an institution in Mexico City’s culinary landscape. Every time I dine here, I’m reminded of why it’s consistently ranked among the world’s best restaurants. Enrique Olvera’s dedication to sustainability and respect for Mexican culinary heritage shines through every dish. The multi-course tasting menu is a journey in itself, and Chef Jesus Duron’s influence has only elevated the experience. If you manage to secure a reservation (which you should try to book months in advance), you’re in for an unforgettable evening that perfectly encapsulates the essence of Mexico’s gastronomic brilliance.

Maizajo

Maizajo is a love letter to the rich traditions of Mexican cuisine, specifically corn, which I am obsessed with. Chef Santiago Muñoz’s dedication to sourcing native corn and producing 100-percent nixtamalized tortillas is truly inspiring. Located in Condesa, Maizajo’s new space offers a unique dining experience with a counter-service taqueria and a lively terrace. The rib-eye and longaniza tacos are absolute must-tries, and if you visit on a weekend, the vibrant atmosphere paired with a glass of wine for a perfect afternoon in bliss! The flavors are deeply rooted in Mexican heritage, and each bite tells a story of the land and its people.

Castacán

For those craving the flavors of Yucatán, Castacán is the place to be. Gabriela Cámara’s menu is a celebration of traditional Yucatecan dishes, with the crispy castacán (pork belly) and cochinita pibil being the stars of the menu when I last dined. The bright pink floor tiles and intricate mosaic walls create a lively atmosphere that’s unmistakably CDMX (who doesn't love pink!), while the flavors transport you straight to the Yucatán Peninsula. Whether you’re indulging in a taco or a more ambitious torta, each dish is a testament to the rich culinary traditions of Mexico.

Address: 387 Calle Puebla, Cuauhtémoc, CDMX

Botánico

Tucked away in a beautifully restored art deco mansion in Condesa, Botánico is the brainchild of chef Alejandra Navarro. The lush courtyard is a serene escape, perfect for enjoying a leisurely lunch or an afternoon of cocktails and shareable plates. The menu is internationally inspired, with standout dishes when I was there earlier this year like oyster platters, fried squid, and pork Milanese. Each dish is prepared with high-quality ingredients and a delicate touch that reflects the chef’s fine dining background. Botánico is where I go when I want to relax, unwind, and indulge in something truly special.

Address: 217 Calle Alfonso Reyes, CDMX

Churrería El Moro

No trip to Mexico City is complete without a visit to Churrería El Moro. Known for making the best churros in the city, this iconic spot offers a sweet escape from the bustling streets. Pair your churros with a cup of Mexican hot chocolate, or indulge in a horchata milkshake for the ultimate treat. The combination of crispy churros coated in cinnamon sugar and the rich, spiced chocolate is simply irresistible. It’s a place where tradition meets indulgence, and every bite brings a smile to my face.

Address: Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas 42, Centro Histórico de la Cdad. de México, CDMX

Taverna

A total Gem, stunning spaces, each room is so unique and beautiful. I recommend visiting in the evening when the candles are lit, the lanterns and glowing and the place is just perfection!

Address: General Prim 34, Mexico CIty.

EATLALO

Just trust me and thank me later :)

Address: Zacatecas 173, Roma Norte CDMX

So, these are just a few of my favorite spots to eat in Mexico City, each offering a unique experience that captures the essence of this vibrant city. Whether you’re savoring the refined flavors of Pujol or indulging in the sweet simplicity of churros at El Moro, every meal is an opportunity to fall in love with Mexico City all over again. And don’t forget, our lipstick shade Mexico City at 9PM is the perfect companion for your evening out in this incredible city—bold, beautiful, and full of life.
